Todd Golden reacts to Tony Bennett's retirement from coaching
Former Virginia head coach Tony Bennett’s retirement weeks before the start of the 2024 regular season proved to be one of the biggest shocks of the offseason.
Bennett cited not being the right man to lead the program in the current NCAA environment as a reason for stepping away from the program. Florida head coach Todd Golden, 39, explained the younger generation’s perspective on the ever-changing landscape of college athletics which has caused several longtime coaches to move on from their respective sports.
“I don’t necessarily know many that enjoy the just the continual changing of our space,” Golden said during an appearance on Another Dooley Noted Podcast. “I think that’s probably the hardest part for us. I think everybody across our profession, whether it’s football or basketball coaches, feels that student-athletes deserve to be compensated in some form or fashion.
“I don’t think that’s even a discussion anymore, but the continual changing of these rules and the transfer portal and all these different things make it really hard to build a stable program that can have longevity. … I think Coach Bennett probably was like, you know, I love what I do, and I love a lot of these things, but just not sure this is where my time is best spent and where I can help the most right now. If he feels that way, then I’m happy for him to be able to step away and take more time with his family. I’m sure he’s happy doing that.”

Being able to adapt in the age of NIL and the transfer portal has been something not every coach has been able to catch on to since it was implemented across the last several years. For a younger coach like Golden, his head coaching tenure, particularly at Florida, has only been during the NIL era.
For a tenured coach like Bennett, they’ve been forced to change their longtime philosophies to meet the criteria needed for success in this day and age. Bennett said that he wanted to be able to give 100% of himself to his team, but wasn’t able to do that thanks to all of the outside factors that go into running a major college basketball program.
At the end of the day, it appears that Tony Bennett chose what was right for him and his family, and the Cavaliers will look to move forward in 2024 under interim head coach Ron Sanchez.
For Golden and the Gators, they tip off their regular season against South Florida on Monday.
