WATCH: Louisiana running back Montrell Johnson announces SEC transfer destination

Louisiana running back Montrell Johnson is following Billy Napier to Florida. In a video announcement posted to his Twitter account, the star running back revealed he’s taking his talents to the SEC.
“I will be continuing my career at the University of Florida!” revealed Johnson.
Moreover, the video features the first look at Johnson in Florida’s iconic blue uniforms. He’s going to look nice scoring touchdowns for the Gators in 2022.
In one season at Louisiana, Johnson put his stamp on the Ragin’ Cajuns. Pacing Napier’s offense, the running back carried the football 162 times as a freshman. Johnson made the most out of his carries, accumulating 838 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Additionally, the former three-star running back made a dent in the receiving game. Johnson added six receptions for 53 yards on the season, as well.
As Billy Napier attempts to rebuild the Florida program, having familiar, talented players like Montrell Johnson will help his mission.
More on Montrell Johnson, Florida Gators
Montrell Johnson isn’t the only former Ragin’ Cajun heading to Florida. Earlier this week, it was revealed that Billy Napier was hiring New York Giants offensive line coach Rob Sale as his offensive coordinator. Before joining the Giants, Sale was one of Napier’s most trusted assistants at Louisiana.

To illustrate, Sale’s first season at the NFL level came in 2021. However, he was Napier’s offensive coordinator at Louisiana from 2018-20. Additionally, Sale also spent time at Arizona State (while Napier was the offensive coordinator), Georgia, Louisiana-Monroe and McNeese State.
Moreover, Sale got his start at the Power Five level at Alabama, where he served as a strength and conditioning assistant and offensive analyst from 2007-11. He overlapped with Napier in Tuscaloosa in 2011.
The Louisiana native played offensive line at LSU.
Former Floirda head coach Dan Mullen served as Florida’s offensive coordinator in addition to his role as head coach last season, so Sale is stepping up in the now unemployed Mullen’s place.
He has his work cut out for him, as Florida went 6-7 this year and won just two SEC games. Granted, the offense largely was not the issue in Gainesville this season, as they posted 30.7 points per game and were fourth in yards per contest in the SEC. Regardless, morale was low at Florida at the end of Mullen’s tenure, and Napier and Sale will need to flip the script to return the Gators to the top of the nation’s best college football conference.
