It is 380 feet to left-center field at Florida‘s Condron Ballpark but Wyatt Langford cleared the wall and then some Sunday with his first-inning two-run bomb against Vanderbilt.

Langford’s 13th homer of the season flew past both the outfield wall and then the wall inclosing the ballpark for a monstrous shot that gave the Gators an early lead.

Hitting in the two-hole, Langford worked the count against Commodores starting pitcher Greysen Carter to 3-1. Carter then threw a 92-mph flat fastball over the middle of the plate.

Langford didn’t miss.

Florida added another run in the inning to take a 3-0 lead.

The Gators have been playing some excellent baseball in the series featuring two top-10 teams. They 10-run ruled the Commodores on Friday as Vanderbilt starter Patrick Reilly got shelled for eight runs in four innings.

They then took Game 2 with a 6-2 victory.

Langford entered the day with three hits in eight at-bats with two walks and three ribbies against Vanderbilt in the series.

Wyatt Langford is one of the top prospects in college baseball

Wyatt Langford is one of the best players in this year’s 2023 MLB Draft and has the potential to be a 1-1 selection. Langford, LSU star outfielder Dylan Crews and LSU fire-balling right-hander Paul Skenes make up one of the most exciting trios at the top of a draft in some time.

All three have good claims on being the No. 1 pick in the draft.

“Langford has five-tool potential,” MLB.com’s draft scouting report reads. “He can really hit, with excellent swing mechanics and a very good approach at the plate, one that helped him limit strikeouts while drawing walks. It also aided in his ability to tap into his considerable raw power, which some area scouts said is plus-plus. Strong and muscle-bound, he’s capable of being at least an above-average runner as well.”

Entering Sunday’s game, Langford was hitting .391 with 12 home runs, 17 doubles, 59 runs scored and a .531 on-base percentage.

Gators right-handed pitcher Hurston Waldrep could join Langford in the top 10 of July’s MLB Draft. MLB.com ranks him as the No. 11 overall prospect in the country and No. 4 pitcher in the class.

Despite the regular season ending next weekend, there is still plenty of time for Langford, Crews and Skenes to try and separate themselves from each other. Florida and LSU are two of the top teams in the nation and could be set for long postseason runs.
