Charlotte (N.C.) Zebulon B. Vance four-star running back Daylan Smothers has been actively attacking his recruitment with a long list of unofficial visits.

Since he first emerged on the recruiting scene, Smothers has taken more than a dozen unofficial visits. And he’s got more trips in the works.

“I have FSU planned for March 5,” Smothers told Blue White Illustrated’s Ryan Snyder on Tuesday.

The trip to Tallahassee would be his second visit of the recruiting process. He was in Tallahassee last summer, and it was an impressive visit. He said he spent a lot of time with Florida State recruiting coordinator David Johnson.

“Great guy, down to earth as well. He let me know how he coaches his running backs,” Smothers told Warchant.com earlier this summer. “He doesn’t take credit. He just takes the talent and keeps it the same. Whatever he can help with, he’ll help with.

“He said I’ve got everything that he looks for, and it’s his job not to mess it up.”

Daylan Smothers heavily pursued

Daylan Smothers is ranked as the No. 270 player in the country, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is the 20th best running back recruit and the No. 8 player in North Carolina in the On3 Consensus.

On3 ranks Daylan Smothers higher than others in the industry. On3 lists Smothers as the No. 12 running back and the fifth-best player in North Carolina.

With those rankings, it’s no surprise to see that he has a long list of national programs after him.

Along with FSU, Tennessee, NC State, South Carolina, Penn State, Ohio State, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Louisville, Boston College, Arkansas, Virginia, West Virginia, Missouri and others have offered him. Clemson and North Carolina are other programs monitoring his recruitment.

Smothers recently told On3’s Lettermen Row he wants to take official visits in the summer instead of during the spring.

He did not list the places where he will no doubt visit. But Smothers said that Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Florida State, Ohio State and Maryland are some of the other programs where he has the best relationships. He’s also taken game day visits to schools like Tennessee and South Carolina.

As of now, Smothers plans on making a commitment during his senior season. But he says that decision could come before the season if he feels “comfortable.”
