Bruce Feldman answers why Florida State dropped in College Football Playoff rankings
The one spot drop from Florida State in the latest rankings for the College Football Playoff could spell trouble for the Seminoles. However, Bruce Feldman sees a simple reason why it happened and, as such, a simple solution to it.
Feldman joined on during ‘The Rich Eisen Show’ this week to discuss FSU’s drop from No. 4 to No. 5. To him, the reasoning is because other teams are adding more significant results to their cases while the ‘Noles, who have already done most of their heavy lifting, is in a position where they’re just trying not to lose.
“Boo Corrigan, the committee chair, will say that it’s some of the resume stuff and where it balances out now that there’s more results,” said Feldman. “Ultimately, I think that is the thing that has got to be your biggest concern if you’re a Florida State fan.”
Many thought the drop had something to do with the loss of Jordan Travis and the switch to Tate Rodemaker. That’s especially so since the Seminoles have a pair of difficult games left on their schedule before the playoff selection.
Still, to Feldman, the change at quarterback may not necessarily pan out to be too much of an issue.
“Tate Rodemaker did lead them to a comeback win when Travis got hurt last year against Louisville. By all accounts, people have a lot of confidence in him. But he’s not the guy that led one of the more prolific offenses in the country,” said Feldman. “They still have all the skill guys, I think they’re still really talented.

“Florida is banged up, Florida is not with their starting quarterback this week in that rivalry game. But then Louisville is a really good team.”
The remedy for all of this in Tallahassee is very clear: win. There wasn’t a problem in the world with their resume before the Travis injury. The only thing you could really hold against them was the strength of the ACC that’s out of their control.
That signals to Feldman that, if they win out and sit at 13-0 as the ACC Champion, their playoff hopes will likely sort themselves out.
“If you look at Florida State, if they get through Louisville and they get through Florida without their starting quarterback? I don’t know how the committee could put them in a precarious position where it’s still not good enough,” Feldman said. “Remember, they smashed LSU in the opener – wasn’t even close. Again, it’s not their fault that the ACC is very shaky outside of them but they’ve won all their games. They scheduled a legit SEC opponent and it wasn’t close.
“I think if you’re Florida State, backup quarterback or not? If you keep winning? You’re going to have a place in the playoff and, probably, will be No. 4.”
