Cam Newton suggests Deion Sanders as future Florida State coach
Deion Sanders has Colorado rolling, which has led to his name being mentioned for multiple high-profile college and NFL jobs. Former Heisman winner Cam Newton made the case for Sanders to lead the Florida State program in the future during ESPN First Take on Friday.
Deion Sanders starred at Florida State in the 1980s, before going on to have a Hall of Fame career. With the Seminoles now 1-9 in 2024, Newton believes Sanders could get FSU back on track.
“I’m gonna tell you what is a good look, I do believe, for Prime, is Florida State University. It makes the most sense,” Cam Newton said. “Because not only would you have the time to build a foundation, you have more resources than, respectfully, Colorado.”
Deion Sanders played for Bobby Bowden at Florida State as Bowden had one of the most dominant programs in all of college football.
However, FSU has been up and down since Bowden retired, with several subpar seasons. Newton feels that Sanders could help Florida State get back to being a premiere college football program.
“I’m looking at one coach that stands out in Florida State that he could potentially be — build a legacy. Bobby Bowden, right?” Newton said.

Sanders has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Dallas Cowboys this week by several people, including ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. However, Newton believes going to Florida State makes way more sense.
“I don’t think (Sanders) would have the same timeframe in Dallas. Mike McCarthy, four years, on the bubble. Jason Garrett, nine years, his quarterbacks: Dak Prescott, Matt Cassel, Tony Romo, Jon Kitna, wow,” Newton said. “Wade Phillips, three years. In this day and age, everything has changed. We want right now results, but we don’t have time to wait for nothing.
“We want a Thanksgiving meal with microwave resources.”
Stephen A. Smith chimed in on the possibility of Deion Sanders coaching the Seminoles and shared that at one point Sanders wanted that job.
“He desperately wanted to coach at Florida State. They shoved him aside like he never was even there, like he didn’t star at the university, like he wasn’t an All-American there,” Smith said. “I mean, they just totally summarily dismissed it.”
