Fentrell Cypress reveals NFL players he looks up to, models game after
On the first day of the new year, former Virginia Cavaliers defensive back Fentrell Cypress revealed where he would be playing for the 2023 season. And that destination was none other than Virginia’s ACC rival in the South, the Florida State Seminoles. During a recent press conference held by the Seminoles, as they prepare for their offseason regimen, Cypress spoke briefly to the media, sharing his thoughts and expectations for Florida State. He also revealed what corners in the NFL
“I like to watch Jaire Alexander, Stephon Gilmore. Those are my top two guys I like to watch when it comes to watching film and model my game after,” said Cypress. “I feel like, technique-wise, there’s a lot of little things that can help a DB become a good DB to a great DB. So there are many things I would like to work on during the off season, even when it comes to the weight room as well. Getting stronger faster and having more knowledge of the game will help me play faster. There’s a lot of things that I have in mind that I would like to improve on throughout this season.”
Cypress spent three seasons with the Cavaliers but only recorded stats in the most recent two. This past season, he was named a starting cornerback for Virginia. Cypress earned several awards, including second-team All-ACC honors and second-team All-ACC by the Associated Press this season. With Florida State, Cypress will look to continue to rack up accolades while improving his skill in preparation for the next level.
Cypress shares feelings on entering transfer portal and receiving interest from FSU
The Florida State Seminoles were active and successful in the transfer portal this offseason, landing three players ranked in the top 10 of On3’s Transfer Portal Rankings. Two of those players are cornerback Fentrell Cypress and offensive tackle Jeremiah Byers, who both recently spoke about their experiences of being recruited out of the transfer portal and ending up in Tallahassee.

“For me I’ll say it was kind of surprising, just how much hype I was getting during the moment but at the same time it was a blessing and overwhelming too. But I just tried to take it day by day and go through the process and just thankful for this blessing that God’s given me,” Cypress said. “So overall it was overwhelming but I was still thankful and it helped me out a lot just going through each school and figuring out what I wanted and what would help me become a better man on and off the field.”
Last season at Virginia, Cypress had 39 tackles and 13 pass breakups, earning all-conference honors from a variety of publications. He chose to stay within the conference following his entrance to the transfer portal, but Byers made the jump from Conference USA to the ACC with his decision.
