On Thursday, Florida State University issued an active shooter alert after reports of gunfire surfaced at FSU’s Student Union. Shortly after the news broke, former Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis wrote online: “Prayers for Tallahassee.”

As of this report, campus police are responding to the scene. Florida State has canceled all remaining classes for the day and has advised its students to seek shelter.

Additionally, the university has activated its emergency notification system, instructing students and staff to lock doors, stay away from windows, and await further instructions. At least four people have been hospitalized, according to a Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare spokesperson, per NBC News.

The hospital didn’t provide further details on the victims’ injuries. In a video posted to X by Jason Delgado, Florida State students could be seen fleeing the area with their hands held over their heads.

A suspect is in custody, according to two law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the situation, per CNN. At 1:05 p.m. ET, a Tallahassee police spokesperson confirmed that a suspect was in custody but couldn’t confirm any deaths. However, they did report there were “multiple injuries.”

Although Travis no longer plays at Florida State, he was one of the first former players to ask for prayers from around the country. Travis is currently a quarterback for the New York Jets, but he played five seasons at FSU (2019-23).

In his four years with the Seminoles, Travis amassed 8,622 passing yards, 65 passing touchdowns, 1,894 rushing yards and 31 rushing touchdowns. Seminoles fans particularly remember Travis for his final season in Tallahassee.

In the 2023 campaign, Travis had a standout season to lead Florida State to an 11-0 record before suffering a season-ending injury. Florida State won its next two games without Travis, including the ACC Championship, but was left out of the College Football Playoff field.

The snub created major controversy. Florida State was the only Power Five team during the four-team CFP era to be excluded with a perfect 13-0 record and conference championship. Due to the frustrating nature of FSU’s exclusion in 2023, fans have only grown more attached to Jordan Travis through the years.

Obviously, the love is mutual. Travis, along with so many other former Seminoles, will undoubtedly be heartbroken by the news of a shooting at their alma mater.
