Florida State still undecided on its starting quarterback on initial depth chart
The Florida State Seminoles are less than a week away from their season-opening home matchup against Notre Dame. Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times reported that UCF transfer McKenzie Milton and Jordan Travis are side-by-side on the team’s initial depth chart at quarterback.
“McKenzie Milton and Jordan Travis listed as -or- QB starters for FSU on the depth chart,” Baker tweeted.
Milton is attempting major comeback following devastating injury
At UCF, Milton saw tremendous success. He threw for 8,683 yards, 72 touchdowns and 22 interceptions, adding 1,078 yards and 20 touchdowns rushing. In his two full seasons as UCF’s starter, the Knights did not lose a single game. Milton’s UCF career came to an abrupt end at the end of the 2018 season when he went down with a major leg injury.
Not only did Milton miss the remainder of the 2018 season, but he missed the entirety of the 2019 and 2020 seasons as well. As he neared his return to the football field, Milton knew that he had to do so away from UCF. Dillon Gabriel took over for Milton as UCF’s starting quarterback, and Milton thought that Gabriel deserved that job without competition.
This led to Milton’s tough decision to transfer. He ultimately ended up at Florida State, where he will continue to fight to become the Seminoles’ starting quarterback.

“I have one shot to go chase a dream,” Milton said when he announced his intention to transfer from UCF. “A lifelong dream to play in the NFL.”
Travis started six games for Florida State last season
Last year, Travis started six games and had mixed results as Florida State’s quarterback. He completed 55 percent of his passes with 1,056 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions. Travis also ran for 559 yards and seven touchdowns.
Last week, Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell said that the team had a pretty good idea of how the quarterback room would look heading into the season.
“We’re going to continue to evaluate that,” Norvell said. “As a staff, we’ll have a pretty good plan going into next week of what we want it to look like. At the end of the day, it’s always a constant competition. If there was just one piece of it, it probably would be a little bit easier. We’ve got some talented guys. Guys that are competing at a high level. We’re going to continue to see that as we progress through.”
