Florida State honoring Seminole legend Terrell Buckley for CFB HOF induction
The Florida State Seminoles had a near-endless number of legends come through the pipeline in the Bobby Bowden era. They routinely fielded some of the greatest defenses in college football history in the early 1990s under longtime defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews. One player who guided the ‘Noles defense to dominance during those days was a man who was inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame in 2019 — former FSU defensive back Terrell Buckley. Florida State will honor him after the first quarter of the Clemson game on Saturday, Oct. 15. Florida State will jointly honor him on Saturday, along with the National Football Foundation for the NFF Hall-of-Fame On Campus Salute.

During the NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes, each inductee returns to their school to accept a Hall of Fame plaque that will remain on permanent display at their school. The experience gives the Hall-of-Famers one more chance to take the field and be recognized by their home fans.

Buckley was recently the cornerbacks coach for the Ole Miss Rebels from 2020-2021. He has coached college football at a variety of teams since 2007. In the future, he has been named as the head coach and general manager of the Orlando Guardians of the XFL. Their regular season is set to begin Feb. 18, 2023.
Buckley is set to be honored this weekend because he was unable to attend during the 2019 season due to his coaching obligations at Mississippi State.

Terrell Buckley was one of the greatest defensive backs in the history of the sport
As a player for the Seminoles, he cemented his legacy among some of the greatest players in the history of the sport when he took home the 1991 Jim Thorpe Award–given to the nation’s top defensive back. Not only did he take home the Jim Thorpe Award, he also finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting after he led the nation with 12 interceptions and 238 interception return yards (both are single-season school records).
The Mississippi native’s 501 career interception return yards are still an NCAA record to this day. His 21 interceptions he snatched with the Seminoles still rank first in Florida State program history. Buckley helped guide FSU to finish with a top four national ranking during each of his four years there. He plastered his name all over the record books in Tallahassee–including career punt returns for touchdown (three), career interceptions returned for touchdown (four), and consecutive games with an interception (five). A member of the Florida State Hall of Fame, Buckley’s No. 27 jersey was retired by the Seminoles in 2011. He’s one of eight former Seminole players to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
In the NFL, Buckley put together a remarkably impressive career where he snatched 50 interceptions during his time in the league. Remarkably consistent, he had at least one interception in 13 consecutive seasons. Simply put, he’s one of the greatest defensive backs to ever play the game.
