Jordan Travis was the Florida State starter for the majority of the last two years but will enter the 2022 season with a fresh breath of air. He will be the full-time guy for head coach Mike Norvell, as the duo enters a pivotal stretch for the Seminoles. Many view this as a time to win in Tallahassee and Travis is expected the be one of the main leaders.

Although he is entering Year Three under Norvell, Travis is just now fully understanding the playbook. He called Norvell’s system “tough,” saying there is a lot of information to learn. Travis has gotten a grasp on it and has made sure his teammates understand just as well as him.

“This playbook is tough, I’m not going to sugarcoat it at all,” Travis said. “This playbook is tough. I’ve worked very hard to understand everything about it. We’re still adding stuff, we’re still changing things week by week. Just trying to adjust and help everybody else. That’s the main thing for me. Helping everybody else understand it. Whatever I learn, I want to give the information to them. Just keep growing.”

Jordan Travis more comfortable with playbook compared to last year

As far as the communication between him and Norvell, Travis says everything is pretty open. He has relayed to Florida State’s head coach that he is comfortable with any play in any situation. Something he could not have said last season.

“I tell him I like everything. I’m comfortable with almost every single play we have, very confident. Whenever he calls a play, I’m confident in it. He does ask me a lot but I’m comfortable with everything.”

“It’s 100% different,” Travis said when comparing his current comfort level to 2021. “I’m just more confident in everything I do. I can just go out there and I feel like I have everything. I can put the ball up, I have great running backs, I have a great line that can block for me. So, I feel great.”

Those other factors around him have been something the Seminoles built up this offseason, especially through the transfer portal. Norvell brought in 10 offensive players from the outside this season. And not just bodies, some quality players such as wide receiver Mycah Pittman.

Florida State was middle of the pack in the ACC from a scoring perspective last year. Something the program will need to improve to have a better 2022 season.

Florida State QB does not know when he nailed down playbook

Learning the playbook was something Travis was able to accomplish over time. He said there was no exact moment as to when everything clicked. Repetition was a big thing for Travis — whether it was on the field or in the film room.

“I don’t really know when that time was,” Travis said. “Just the repetition in practice. Getting a lot of reps this spring — the whole visual reps. Just sitting back and just watching everything, taking the mental reps. Talking with the guys, seeing what they see. Film has helped me a lot. Just the repetition.”
