Mike Norvell addresses overall depth, position battles still up for grabs in preseason
Florida State head coach Mike Norvell may not have liked the record the Seminoles finished with last season, but he seems to like the roster he’s entering the 2022 season with. Norvell talked about his team depth and position battles still happening during game, and seems to have already have a pretty good pulse on who will be playing significant snaps for the Seminoles this season.
“I think we have a pretty good sense of the guys that have shown the consistency that will be able to help us. Now the extent of that is still unknown and what I like is I do think we have depth. I think we have guys that can help this team, certain positions more than others, but what that’s going to look like come game day, that’s a daily process. That’s going to go all the way up til we kick off, just showing that consistency and play-making ability and whatever your role is,” Norvell said.
Norvell lost arguably his best players on both sides of the ball to the NFL this offseason in Jermaine Johnson and Jashaun Corbin, but seems confident in replacing his lost production with emerging talent.
“But I think we’ve had some guys that have really emerged and stood out, and they’ve got to continue to do that and now we’ll be able to, probably mid-week, kind of get a little bit more solidified. Who’s going to be in those top couple groups and some guys that just need a little more time to develop, whether it’s in this season or even for future seasons, but like I said, I like this group and I like the work that they put in and I think we’re in a good place. Just gotta go get better,” Norvell said.

Norvell brought slight improvement to the Seminoles’ record between his first and second season, bettering the team from 3-6 in 2020, to 5-7 last season. But his biggest blemish on last season may be how they started the year going 0-4 in their first four games, highlighted by a three-point loss to FCS school Jacksonville State.
Hopefully, the Seminoles can get off to a hotter start this year, as they open the season versus at-home Duquesne, and Norvell can continue to construct his roster for success throughout the remainder of fall camp.
