Mike Norvell believes Johnny Wilson can be dominant wideout for Florida State
The Florida State Seminoles have some serious talent on the offensive side of the ball at wide receiver. And one of those talented wideouts, Johnny Wilson, has been making some spectacular plays throughout the offseason. His elevated level of play has led some to believe he can be a dominant wideout in college football. And recently, Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell shared his thoughts on that sentiment.
“I believe so. I mean, he’s got great size, speed, catches the ball, and has a big catch radius; he possesses the qualities you want,” said Norvell. “I think he’s done a really good job here in fall camp and preparing himself for this game week. He had some incredible plays today, and (we’re) excited about where he’s going.”
The six-foot-seven sophomore from Calabasas, CA, transferred to Florida State this offseason after spending his first two years as an Arizona State Sun Devil. During his time with the Sun Devils, Wilson recorded 18 catches for 243 yards and a touchdown; the majority of that stat line came from his 2021 season. There he finished the year with 12 catches for 154 yards and a touchdown, recording at least one reception in four games.
Norvell: He’s not the only one that I think can be awesome
Being a dominant wide receiver is not just about talent; you have to have the proper mindset to dominate on the field. Something Norvell believes that not just Wilson has but his entire wide receiver room.

“Our guys have that that that approach. And he’s not the only one that I think can be awesome. It’s part of — you’ll be awesome if you prepare yourself and you go perform at that level on a consistent basis; and I think that’s what we’ve seen as fall camps gone through. He’s been consistently making the great plays.
“And that’s where, when you look at that receiver room, guys have had some great flashes and great moments; it’s about the continuing to stack the consistency of it. But I’m really excited about what I’m seeing from that group.”
Wilson may have the physical tools and quite possibly the mindset to be an unbelievably dominant wide receiver for Florida State. But the other thing Wilson will need he can’t provide for himself and that is an offense around him and a quarterback that gives him the opportunity to be the best version of himself he can be. If that happens, not only will he be dominant, but the Seminoles will have a chance to have a dominant bounce-back season in 2022.
