Head coach Mike Norvell was finally able to break through in 2022, getting Florida State to double-digit wins for the first time since the Jimbo Fisher era. A bowl win against Oklahoma capped off an excellent season but news has continually gotten better since then.

Plenty of talent will be returning to Tallahassee to run things back alongside Norvell. Many are placing the Seminoles inside the top 10 of way-too-early polls, giving them a fighting shot at a College Football Playoff appearance. But no kind of expectations can be placed before looking at a schedule.

Florida State saw its full 2023 schedule released on Monday. Two key nonconference matchups against SEC opponents, LSU and Florida, have been known for some time. However, the nine ACC conference games will be crucial for the Seminoles.

  • Week 1 (Sunday, Sept. 3) – LSU (Orlando, FL)
  • Week 2 (Sept. 9) – Southern Miss
  • Week 3 (Sept. 16) – at Boston College
  • Week 4 (Sept. 23) – at Clemson
  • Week 5 (Sept. 30) – BYE
  • Week 6 (Oct. 7) – Virginia Tech
  • Week 7 (Oct. 14) – Syracuse
  • Week 8 (Oct. 21) – Duke
  • Week 9 (Oct. 28) – at Wake Forest
  • Week 10 (Nov. 4) – at Pitt
  • Week 11 (Nov. 11) – Miami
  • Week 12 (Nov. 18) – North Alabama
  • Week 13 (Nov. 25) – at Florida

Florida State, ACC unrolls 3-5-5 scheduling model

A new scheduling format is being implemented by the ACC, with the 3-5-5 rolling into the conference this season. Three opponents will be permanent, while the other 10 programs will be rotated on a yearly basis. Probably the future of scheduling in college football, the ACC is ahead of the ball.

From a Florida State perspective, the three annual opponents are Clemson, Miami, and Syracuse. Of course, the in-state rivalry against the Hurricanes was always going to be on the schedule. The first of the three has been the ACC’s stable game over the years as well.

Ten other conference opponents are out there, as they will appear on the schedule twice over a four-year period. Assuming the ACC rotates have five on a bi-annual basis, here is how Florida State’s future schedules would stack up.

Odd years – Boston College, Duke, Pitt, Virginia Tech

Even years – Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia

However, for now, the focus for Florida State will be on the 2023 season. Norvell will have a tough beginning to the year facing off against LSU and Clemson. But if there is going to be a serious run at an ACC title, those early tests will be welcomed by the Seminoles.
