Jared Verse has had his stamp on Florida State‘s success throughout 2022, and the Cheez-It Bowl against Oklahoma was no different.

The Albany transfer had been one of the best in the ACC this season, but was held intact by the Sooners on Thursday — if you consider Verse finishing with two tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss, and 1.5 sacks intact.

The full sack was all-important, as Verse was able to end the game by getting to opposing quarterback Dillon Gabriel, watching the clocks run out.

As if the Florida State star defender wasn’t motivated enough by an opportunity for a bowl game victory, the opposing Oklahoma offensive line provided extra fire. According to Verse, there was some trash talk between him and Sooners right tackle Tyler Guyton, with the Florida State pass rusher getting the last overall laugh.

“It was very gratifying. The whole game they did a good job containing me. That right tackle, he was very good. He clamped me up a couple times where I was like, all right. You know me, I love to talk,” stated Verse. “He was talking to me, I’m like, ‘Yeah, okay, I’m going to get you.’ That last play, I remember vividly, he said to me, ‘You’re not going to do nothin’ in the league. You’re not going to make it to the league.’ I looked at him, I said, ‘Watch this next play,’ and we the got sack.

“I think it was D-Low right there with me. We looked at the clock, 3 seconds left, time running out, I started laughing at him. Quarterback tried to hike the ball, everything, and I am like, It is over. We hear the buzz, and everybody starts to scream. It was a great feeling.”

Once Verse got done telling the story, head coach Mike Norvell was impressed with how descriptive Verse was. Obviously, the moment will stick with Jared Verse for some time to come, and he’s going to hold it in high regard.

More on Jared Verse, Florida State Seminoles

As for Verse possibly making the NFL, he was projected to go in the first round in Todd McShay’s first mock draft of the year. He was selected 30th overall, a pick currently held by the Minnesota Vikings but at the time, Kansas City was the team.

If he continues to make plays such as the final one, he will for sure be making his way to the league within the next few months.

But at the moment, the NFL was most likely far from Verse’s mind. He was looking to help get a tenth win for Florida State and help conclude a great season for Norvel. 2016 was the last double-digit victory season for the Seminoles, coming under Jimbo Fisher.

It’s been a tough but worthwhile rebuild these past three years. Jared Verse was there to secure the special moment, with some extra motivation.
