JD PicKell: Florida State football’s path to success in 2022
2022 is a make-or-break type of season for Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles. Unable to produce a winning season in the two years since taking over as head coach, his time might be running out at the helm of the Seminoles program if he can’t lead FSU to at least a bowl game this season.
On3’s JD PicKell discussed his thoughts on Norvell and the state of the Seminoles, as well as the other major universities (Miami, Florida) in the Sunshine State on a recent episode of the Hard Count.
“To me, it comes down to personnel,” PicKell said of the Seminoles. “Because Mike Norvell, it’s been very, very clear that he needs to win this year. 5-7 last year in 2021 that’s not going to cut it. Now, he hasn’t had a perfect set of circumstances. Jordan Travis is the guy that they’re excited about at quarterback, there’s been good reports for him. What do you have up from the offensive line?
“Is the way that you retooled your program via the transfer portal – is that effective? Do you have the personnel to win seven or eight games? That’s what it comes down to for me. Paired with that is the Jordan Travis concerns because 15 touchdowns, six interceptions a year ago – I know he wasn’t getting all the snaps last year with McKenzie Milton getting some time – Is Jordan Travis the answer at quarterback?”

While PicKell made his concerns under center for the ‘Noles clear, he is excited about other areas of the Seminoles lineup, particularly Mycah Pittman out at wide receiver.
“[Florida State staff] has been pleased with him and his development and fall camp,” PicKell said of Pittman. “A guy that started off a little bit slower and Mike Norvell said he’s been he had some practices early on that weren’t up to his standards, speaking to Mycah Pittman has a high standard for himself, but I think he’s going to be a guy that is someone who infuses some excitement and some explosive playability into that offense.
“So, we’ll see what happens but ultimately, I think for Florida State, the personnel is not yet there to where I think they’re going to be a force in the Sunshine State.”
