Kaley Mudge reflects on viral home run rob vs. Oklahoma
Oklahoma took game one of the Women’s College World Series against Florida State by a score of 5-0. However, that game nearly ended earlier when the Sooners nearly added a three-run home run to make it 8-0. However, Florida State’s Kaley Mudge saved the day with an outstanding home run robbery.
Since then, Mudge went viral for that robbery, a play that she knew in the moment that she needed to make.
“Yeah, definitely saw the ball go over my head,” Kaley Mudge said. “Knowing the three-run home run could have ended it, wanted to try to do something for Allison, for my team.”
“Grateful their fence is short. I was able to get up a little bit on that fence. It’s a moment I dream of regardless of the score. Just being able to stay in it, hitters being able to get a little bit more information in the top of the seventh inning is huge for tomorrow. Excited to go out and make more adjustments for tomorrow.”
Just as Kaley Mudge needed to make that catch to avoid getting run-ruled, Florida State now needs a win to avoid their season ending in a loss. However, beating Oklahoma won’t be easy. The Sooners have now won 52 games in a row, dating back to February.
Getting a win would force a third WCWS game, which would be a winner take all battle between these two dominant programs.
“We’ve responded well [to adversity] all season,” Kaley Mudge said. “So I’m excited to see tomorrow.”

It may have been just one play, but it was a huge, dramatic play. It’s the kind of play that can give a player and team confidence and momentum going into game two.
Florida State players praised head coach Lonni Alameda
Ahead of the Women’s College World Series, multiple Florida State players sang the praises of head coach Lonni Alameda.
“To me, Coach gave me a start. She gave me a new chapter in life that I really didn’t think I’d get. I say to myself a lot I’m living a dream that I didn’t know I had, and it’s a lot because of Coach and these girls,” senior Mack Leonard said. “To just constantly remind myself that I’m so, so grateful.”
Star catcher Michaela Edenfield added her own thoughts on Coach Alameda.
“Coach and the staff gave the girl in the backyard of Tallahassee a shot. I talk about it all the time. I chose to come to Florida State to grow not only as a player but as a person. Just thinking of how nurturing of an environment it is. Like we say it takes a village, we do have a village behind us, and it’s amazing that I’ve been able to experience my time here at Florida State. Coach has just allowed me to grow and be myself both on and off the field.”
