Keon Coleman details how Johnny Wilson has helped him at FSU
The arrival of Keon Coleman to Tallahassee from the transfer portal gave Florida State a big-time weapon in the passing game. However, the Seminoles already had one of those back from last season after a breakout year from Johnny Wilson.
Coleman described what he has already learned from Wilson in their time together in an interview during FSU’s fall camp. He said he has learned a lot considering they’re both bigger receivers and because they both work together to improve one another’s game on and off the field.
“He’s a bigger guy doing it, staying lower like he’s 5’11. Really just size, pad level, still getting in and out of breaks,” Coleman said. “(We’re) just helping each other film-wise, critiquing the small, little things and our technique to become a more well-rounded receiver.”
Coleman arrives after becoming Michigan State’s leading receiver last fall. He finished his second season with the Spartans with 58 catches for 798 yards and seven touchdowns.
Even so, Florida State’s receiving corps belonged to Wilson first after he transferred in the year prior from Arizona State. He finished as a top receiver as well last season as he caught 43 balls for 897 yards and five scores.
This duo will give Jordan Travis some serious targets on the outside after he also took a massive step forward as a passer last year. They’ll be even better as a pair as well if they continue to take notes off of one another like Coleman says they already have been.
Mike Norvell on Travis-Wilson connection: ‘It needs to be a good one’
Coming into 2023, Florida State has one of the best quarterback-wide receiver tandems in the country with Jordan Travis and Johnny Wilson. That’s a connection that head coach Mike Norvell knows needs to remain a good one for the Seminoles.

Norvell explained that their intensity is part of what is going to make them such a key connection for Florida State this season.
“It needs to be a good one,” Norvell said. “But what I love is you see the intensity. I mean, this is practice 11 and they went out like it was a championship game. That’s what it needs to be because if we can do that if we could consistently show up with that, it’s gonna make it that much better when game time gets here, just in the confidence of what we’re asking them to do.”
In 2022, the connection between Travis and Wilson blossomed in Wilson’s first season at Florida State following his transfer from Arizona State. They connected for 43 completions for 897 yards. That’s 20.9 yards per completion to go along with five touchdowns.
This year expectations are much higher in Tallahassee than they were going into last season. The Seminoles need this connection to stay effective throughout the year to have the kind of success they expect to this season.
