Kirk Herbstreit compliments Florida State's maturity on ESPN College GameDay
After two impressive victories for Florida State, the College GameDay Crew is taking this Seminoles squad serious as a contender this season.
On Saturday morning’s Week 3 edition of GameDay, the crew discussed FSU’s upcoming road matchup against Boston College. Kirk Herbstreit claimed he’s seen a different attitude from Florida State this year, noticing that they’re focused solely on taking care of business on the football field. He says the team is completely locked in and not taking victory laps after a couple strong performances.
Here was Herbstreit explaining that mindset.
“Being around Florida State against LSU — you know, you get around teams that’s had some history of suffering, and there’s some players that have been on that team and are now older, and they win a big game and everyone’s patting them on the back. And they’re kinda like ‘yeah, yeah, yeah, onto the next one.’ That’s what Florida State reminds me of.”
The Seminoles struggled with consistency in past seasons under Mike Norvell. But with older guys now in place, the program has taken on a more mature approach, says Herbstreit.
“As (Norvell) was building this, it was a Florida State team that could beat anybody one week, next week they could lose to anybody. This is a mature team to me. They’re on business trips every single Saturday. So this is a real brand right now. For real, not just this week, for real all year. They’re going to be a handful in the ACC.”
Pat McAfee added that the ‘Noles have a real playmaker under center in sixth-year senior Jordan Travis.

“Jordan Travis feels like a dude,” McAfee asserted. “They’re rushing for 300 yards a game now at this point. They are stacked all over the place. I don’t think the injuries are going to be an issue. And with the weather settling in, I like Florida State. And this should be a fun team for Norvell to coach the rest of the way.”
Desmond Howard agreed with McAfee, noting that Mike Norvell has “built a team with depth and a lot of talent too.” But he’s been especially impressed with star wideout and Michigan State transfer Keon Coleman so far.
“What a gift he got in Keon Coleman,” Howard emphasized. “Ridiculous. Like, he just fell into his lap!”
Rece Davis reminded Howard that the transfer portal is a bit more complicated than that and FSU should be credited for going out and landing Coleman. But yes, the entire crew agreed that some key transfers across the last few years — also including Travis at QB and superstar defensive lineman Jared Verse — have really helped elevate FSU.
