Link Jarrett offers his view of Florida State pitching

Florida State baseball coach Link Jarrett knows that attrition is part of life in the postseason, but he’s confident the Seminoles have the depth and talent to overcome some injury setbacks.

For one, FSU already had to overcome stretches where they weren’t at 100%. When they are fully loaded, Jarrett’s not sure if he’s seen a better club under his watch, but that’s partially because they can also withstand serious injuries.

“The pitching situation was tough. There was a period of time when I thought it was as complete a team as I’ve ever coached,” Jarrett said ahead of the Tallahassee Regional.

“And it’s clearly still a really good team,” he added. “When we had (Cam) Leiter and (Jamie) Arnold and (Conner Whittaker) and (Ben) Barrett all healthy, this was a unique staff. Now, it remains that, because I think we now have nine pitchers that have recorded saves.”

That depth is something Link Jarrett can depend on no matter which of his pitchers suffers an unfortunate setback.

“You look at the depth of the staff overall and how guys have absorbed some of the innings that we clearly lost when a couple of your starting pitchers spent significant time out. So that’s how I view the pitching. I’m proud of of how the guys stepped into different roles.”

You never want to have to go deep into your bullpen, but Jarrett and other coaches are all too familiar with the fact that your hand will often be forced this late in the season. So, it’s all about having those guys down the bench who can step up when called upon.

“I think there’s other teams that would tell you they’re in a similar situation with absorbing damages to the pitching staff, but you have to have enough depth and talent to overcome that.”

Even this weekend, Cam Leiter is out, which forces other guys throughout the rotation to move up. During his media session ahead of the game, he also addressed the new pitching plan, according to a tweet from Warchant, who tweeted Thursday:

“FSU coach Link Jarrett tells the media today that Carson Dorsey will start Game 1 of the Tallahassee Regional against Stetson. Jamie Arnold will pitch Game 2. Cam Leiter will not be available this weekend. Bullpen session on Thursday did not go as well as hoped.”

Well, it’s time for Dorsey to shine, and we know he’ll have full faith from his head coach.
