Micah Posey details his use of technology while coaching, when that began
New Florida State pitching coach Micah Posey detailed his use of technology while coaching and how it evolved over a decade.
Posey comes to Tallahassee from Dallas Baptist. So now that he’s in the spotlight of college baseball, he might need to keep adjusting with the times.
Enter the world of advanced technology in college baseball.
“I remember in 2011, I started my coaching career and I had just got done with pro baseball,” Posey said. “It’s funny, I didn’t really know what I believed. I didn’t have a philosophy, I knew I had to have all that and so I started just trying to learn every year, just try digging, talk to the right people, ask the right questions, be curious. About that time, the technology was starting to take off and I knew if I could get on the front side of it, it would be good for me.”
Posey revealed how he got into the new wave of baseball.
“I had friends like Dusty Blake, who’s the big league pitching coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, and some other people that would invest in me and kind of share some of the things with me,” Posey said. “That’s kind of how I got into it. I’m super, super curious and fascinated. When you start to learn it all, it makes sense.
”Your eyes can validate a lot but when you have the numbers, it kind of validates what you’re seeing. And every now and then, you’re like I’m not seeing that but this is what the numbers say. Ultimately, the hitter tells you if the pitch is good or not but I think the technology does help you get out in front of it.”

Numbers, advanced stats, metrics, analytics and more are definitely more prevalent in baseball these days. Some prefer the old school approach, but Posey is balancing the two.
Posey was a Florida State fan growing up so it was easy to say yes to this opportunity. Heck, he was thrilled just to be able to put the team’s colors back on.
“I grew up pulling for Florida State,” Posey said. “This was my team. I wasn’t a big pro sports fan growing up in this town. This is kind of what you do, you support Florida State athletics. The chance to wear garnet and gold is pretty special.
“It’s still kind of weird when you’re at other schools, you make it a point not to wear another school’s stuff, so I haven’t worn this in ten years since I went to a football game so every time I put on the practice gear, I feel like I’m getting ready to go tailgating but I’m excited to be back for sure.”
