After beating LSU in Orlando, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell is turning his attention to the Seminoles’ next test, Southern Miss. Coming into the game, the Golden Eagles have an interesting quarterback situation.

Ahead of that game, Norvell broke down Southern Miss quarterback Billy Wiles and how he could challenge Florida State.

“Extremely accurate,” Mike Norvell said. “You can tell that he understands where to go with the ball. He gets the ball out quick. You know, he’s got some good skill players around him, but you can tell the rhythm and timing, which I know Coach [Will] Hall and he’s a great developer of quarterbacks. He played the position. He’s a very, very smart football coach and they play to the quarterback’s strengths at a very high level.”

Despite how good of a quarterback developer Will Hall has been in his career, Southern Miss has struggled to find a consistent quarterback in recent years. At times, the Golden Eagles have even relied on a running back taking direct snaps. However, Billy Wiles may offer stability.

Wiles is a redshirt sophomore who transferred to the program from Clemson.

Last week, Southern Miss beat Alcorn State 40-14. Wiles had 267 yards passing and three touchdowns in the game.

Mike Norvell says every day is a test

It could be easy for Florida State to put its guard down after beating LSU. However, Mike Norvell knows that the Seminoles need to treat every day like a test.

“It provides an opportunity to continue to be tested. But every day is a test. I know that’s — but it is. Each day we have to get up and make a decision on what we want to be, and I challenged the guys last week. I think it was our Wednesday practice. I mean, that was a test. Ultimately, there was some sloppiness and some things that showed up at that point that showed up early in the first half of the game. And that p****d me off,” Norvell said.

“I thought our Thursday and our Friday were much better. That also shows up. But the structure of this week, it 100 percent does provide an opportunity to have to challenge yourself to another level, just in the sense of urgency of getting your body back to where it needs to be. Coaches, players, everybody involved in the preparation of what we’re going to do, the plan of attack, and obviously going and being able to execute it. So, we spent a lot of time this summer preparing for this game. I know it would be a short week, so we had a good plan in place, got a lot of early work. Now we’re here, we’ve got to go do it. So, I’m excited to see our guys continue to respond to this week.”
