No. 5 Florida State has already passed two of their season’s biggest tests over their first four games. Now, as the Seminoles come out of their bye week, Mike Norvell sees another coming their way in the form of Virginia Tech and QB Kyron Drones.

Norvell spoke highly of Drones and the Hokies during his press conference on Monday. When it comes to his dual-threat ability, he referenced their earlier matchups with LSU QB Jayden Daniels and Boston College QB Thomas Castellanos as examples of players they’ve already come across that have hurt them.

“We faced one a few weeks ago that hurt us. Ultimately, they did a good job,” said Norvell. “They had some designed quarterback runs, they got out on us. I’m sure they’re going to look at a lot of those things.”

To Norvell, though, Drones is a legitimate dual-threat with his arm talent as well. Mix that in with his reckless approach to rushing the ball and he knows Florida State will have their hands full with him come Saturday.

“He’s got a strong arm,” said Norvell. “I mean he can throw it all over the field, had a big, 60-yard touchdown pass that was placed perfectly to one of his big receivers.”

“The quarterback is a tough runner,” Norvell added. “I mean he’s not one of those guys that’s just looking to get a few yards. If he gets an opportunity, he’s going to try to run over you. You see that toughness, you saw that put on display.”

Drones, a sophomore transfer from Baylor, has completed 56.4% of his passes in Grant Wells’ place. Those have led to 617 yards, four touchdowns, and only one interception during Virginia Tech’s start. He has also rushed 62 times for over 200 yards and four more scores.

With him at QB1, Norvell preached discipline when it came to his defense. He said that FSU would have to bring it and get after it in order to bring the Hokies down.

“You’ve got to come with all you have and then, when you get there, you’ve got to a lot of garnet jerseys that are tracking with you to make sure we get these guys down because they do run tough,” said Norvell.
