The world of NIL, while extremely fruitful for many, is still ridiculously complicated. Leaders across the collegiate landscape have asked Congress to step in and provide guidance in the form of laws and regulations. Different states have come up with different rules and regulations, which makes the whole situation a massive headache for college football coaches across the country.

At the ACC spring meetings, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell recently broke down the new challenges across the NIL landscape.

“I think when you look at, I don’t know the exact numbers…knowing all the state policies, but I think 30. That’s probably 30 different standards of how states operate within their regulations of NIL and how you see it’s being used as a competitive….trying to create competitive advantages within states. And that’s hard. Those are all different dynamics that presents some unique challenges,” Norvell said.

“And it’s not, like I said, to be able to have an umbrella approach federally. It helps give guidelines, but also provides protection for the students. And that’s where a lot of people, they can try and take advantage of kids in the high school range. They go from 16 to 22. I mean, those are challenging years and just making sure they are represented by quality certified individuals as well as the decisions that are being made,” Norvell said.

“Uplift them and put them in a position to be successful not only in high school or college, but also, beyond that. So, those are all things that [we’re] trying to evaluate that we have discussions when there’s 30 plus different laws or structures….It’s a lot to manage,” the Florida State head coach said.

Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles have greatly benefitted from the transfer portal this offseason. They landed one of the nation’s top corners in former Virginia Cavalier Fentrell Cypress II.

On Wednesday evening, they also landed former Michigan State star receiver Keon Coleman, who stands at an imposing 6-foot-4. As of Friday night (05/19/23), the Seminoles have landed the nation’s No. 8 overall class in the 2023 On3 Transfer Portal Rankings.

The Florida State Seminoles return one of the most loaded rosters in the entire ACC for the 2023 campaign. They have numerous weapons on the offensive and defensive side of the football. They’ll kick off their season against the LSU Tigers on Sunday, Sept. 3.
