Mike Norvell delivers glowing review of Florida State quarterback AJ Duffy
Florida State has added some competition to the quarterback room. The Seminoles return Jordan Travis, who led the team in passing last season. McKenzie Milton is now gone, but Florida State added a talented freshman to the mix in A.J. Duffy. Florida State also has redshirt sophomores Gino English and Tate Rodemaker in the quarterback room in addition to Travis and Duffy.
Duffy comes to Florida State as a four-star recruit according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is the 11th rated quarterback in the 2022 class and the 24th overall player out of the state of Florida. He chose the Seminoles over Michigan State and Miami, among others.
So far, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell is incredibly impressed with what he’s seen out of Duffy.
“AJ Duffy for his first scrimmage was really impressive,” Norvell said of Florida State’s newest addition to the quarterback room, via Ben Meyerson. “He probably had one of the best throws of the day. On a little boot-action he threw it 45 yards deep to his left that was impressive. It was a great throw. But he doesn’t act like a freshman.
“This is somebody that should be in the spring semester of his senior year. He just has a different mentality and he’s prepared for the moment. He’s come in and he’s competing. He still has a lot of things to clean up. I like his presence in the ownership of what he’s doing.”

Duffy could provide a boost to the Florida State quarterback room
Last season, Travis completed 62.9% of his passes for 1,539 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. He was also second on the team in rushing with 134 attempts for 530 yards and seven scores. Milton saw some time as well, throwing for 775 yards with three touchdowns and six interceptions.
Travis likely has the inside track to become Florida State’s starter again next season. But if Duffy continues to impress Norvell, he could play a role in Florida State’s quarterback room.
Last season was disappointing for the Seminoles, as they went 5-7 overall and 4-4 against ACC opponents. Florida State finished in fifth place in the ACC Atlantic, trailing behind Wake Forest, NC State, Clemson, and Louisville.
