Mike Norvell feels a sense of urgency from Jordan Travis entering Week 6
Florida State coach Mike Norvell only sees Jordan Travis getting better as the season goes on. The Seminoles quarterback has been impressive in the early part of the year, leading FSU to a 4-0 record with wins against LSU and Clemson.
Florida State had a bye this past week, giving Travis and the rest of the team a much-deserved break after those tough early games. Now as the team is back at it with a Week 6 matchup against Virginia Tech looming, and Norvell has seen “urgency” from the Seminoles QB in practice this week.
“Last week his approach, today, you feel his urgency,” he said. “I love the way he’s practicing. Yes, he was really good, but we tend to push him to be better than he’s been. I thought he looked good today.”
Travis is off to a scorching start to the season, having put up 1,028 yards passing, 10 touchdowns and an interception through the first four games. He’s also scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground while averaging 23.5 yards rushing per contest.
He had his best game of the season in Week 1 against LSU as Florida State sent a statement to the rest of the country with a 45-24 win. Travis completed 23-of-31 passes (74.7%) while throwing for 342 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.
Two weeks ago against Clemson, he came up clutch to connect with Keon Coleman for the game-winning touchdown on the opening play of overtime. All this has resulted in Travis having the fifth-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy, and he has a chance to rise even higher with a big performance this weekend.

Despite a 2-3 record thus far, Virginia Tech ranks as the No. 10 passing defense in the country with just 157.8 air yards allowed per game. That should result in a more challenging task for Travis than expected, but Norvell believes he’ll come ready based on what he’s seen this week in practice.
Kickoff between Florida State and Virginia Tech is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday in Tallahassee.
Jordan Travis admits he tweaked arm injury vs. Clemson
Jordan Travis entered Florida State’s game against Clemson last week dealing with an injury to his left shoulder. Travis admitted postgame that he tweaked the injury, and also hurt his throwing hand and briefly exited the game.
“Yeah, I tweaked it a little bit but that’s football,” Travis said. “It’s a tough game and, especially playing quarterback, you’ve got to be one of the toughest guys on the field, put injuries aside no matter what, and put your life on the line for this football team, and I’ll do that every single day.”
Given his comments and the extra week off, Travis should be ready to go Saturday and hopefully the injury will prove a non-issue as it did in Week 4.
