Miami has been dealing with an injury to starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. However, head coach Mario Cristobal has been coy about how long he’ll be out with an injury that he suffered against Duke. Nobody knows if Cristobal is expecting backup Jake Garcia or Tyler Van Dyke to start, which is kind of the point. He wants to make it harder for Florida State head coach Mike Norvell to prepare for the game.

In response, as Mike Norvell explained to the media in a press conference, he is having Florida State prepare for both quarterbacks this week.

“I mean, you look at the total package of their season and obviously they’ve had a quarterback that was hurt and that was something. Any time a quarterback goes down it’s a challenge,” Mike Norvell said. “But, they’re a very talented football team”

“With Van Dyke, we’re expecting him to play this week,” Mike Norvell continued. “We’re gonna go through and have some level of plan for playing Garcia, and for him. For two guys that are very talented. Van Dyke’s one of the top quarterbacks in the country and they’ve got weapons, and this is a talented football team that we’re playing.”

Mike Norvell also pointed out that there was a lot of preseason hype around Miami for a reason. This is an incredibly talented team that has gone through some issues but still has that talent.

“They were a preseason pick to win the division and it’s not–that wasn’t just because of hope for it. This is a team that we know the ability they have. It can be a very explosive offense, just like anybody, if there’s mistakes that show up, I mean it’s gonna hurt them. In the Duke game, it was tough. You turn the ball over eight times, it’s hard to have much success, and they’re going to address that. They’re going to continue to go. I know, I mean, yesterday, or I guess Saturday’s game they–new starting quarterback,” Mike Norvell said.

“Just some things you go through with that, but they found a way to win the game and to do that on the road, I mean you respect that. Ultimately, we’ve got to continue to focus on us.”

Miami leads the all-time series between these two teams, 35-31. However, Florida State won the 2021 game. This year’s meeting will take place at Miami.

Mike Norvell on Florida State’s offense

Mike Novell also gave an assessment of where he feels the Florida State offense is to this point in the season.

“Yeah, I mean, I like what we’ve shown, you know. We talked about it a little bit even last week. Just, you know, throughout, when you go back and you look at the things that have hurt us in times and moments — it’s really been a lot of self-inflicted issues. And, you know, I think you’ve seen growth from our offense. I think you see the explosiveness. I think you see guys that have a lot of confidence in what we’re doing. We’ve been very balanced, which I love. And, you know, being able to establish the run with the explosive plays that have showed up in passing game,” Mike Norvell said.

“But those self-inflicted issues — that, I mean, you can’t have. Whether it’s a dropped pass, whether it’s a penalty, you know, turning the ball over, you’ll put the ball on the ground, those things I mean. That’s what’s hurt us in the times we’ve not been successful. But, I mean, I think we’re really close and we’re playing at a high level. One of the most explosive offenses in the country.”
