Florida State is finally in the win column to start the season. For the first time since 2016, the Seminoles possess a 1-0 record after defeating Duquense 47-7. However, head coach Mike Norvell still sees plenty of room for improvement, especially among his defensive backs.

The FSU coach was pleased with the secondary’s performance overall, but a couple plays in particular had him madder than a wet hornet at some of his players. After the game, he was asked about that group and why he was so upset at one of his players after a mistake.

He actually gave a long answer mostly praising the guys while mentioning the one big error from yesterday. You can watch his comments right here or read them in full below.

Mike Norvell on secondary play vs. Duquense

“You know, I thought they did good. I thought there was, you know, we had one, the one foolish penalty, you know. And I appreciate you know the young man coming. He knew it immediately. Owned it, you know. But we’ve got to get that corrected but, you know, I thought they were competitive to the ball.

“I thought we had some some PBUs, you know. Being able to mix, you know, different Personnel groups. I mean, we played, you know, five DBs, six DBs at times. It was good to see the way that, you know, they competed. It was good to see.

“It was Azareye’h Thomas, get in Sam McCall, you know, Greedy Vance, a newcomer into the program. But, you know, those guys, they definitely challenged me. I’ve really been pleased with Renardo Green, you know, throughout this fall camp. And, you know, he’s he’s just getting better every single day. And Jarrian Jones has had a good fall camp. And, you know, like I said, there was the mistake early, but he really, really responded.

“I’m proud of how those guys played. I mean, they shut down the passing game and you know I thought they did a great job.”

One foul move by Jones among an otherwise excellent night of defensive play.
