The Florida State Seminoles and head coach Mike Norvell are looking for a better season in 2025 than they had in 2024. A key piece to that puzzle is going to be figuring out the quarterback position and improving that unit in spring practice.

One new name in the quarterback room worth keeping an eye on is Thomas Castellanos. He has experience starting in the ACC and has played for new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn in the past. Now, he’s starting to impress Mike Norvell in spring ball as well.

“I thought he had a good day,” Mike Norvell said. “Hit a couple vertical shots that were extremely well placed. His athleticism, his presence within the pocket, and I thought he did a good job of delivering the football. Got to go back and watch through to some of the specific aiming points, but I thought he was pretty clean today.”

Thomas Castellanos is far from the only quarterback that Florida State is looking at. The Seminoles also return Brock Glenn, who has experience under Norvell. On top of that, Class of 2025 quarterback Kevin Sperry is already making noise in camp despite his young age.

“We introduced just for a few sets of third downs. So, get some different looks. But, I thought all three quarterbacks had their moments. Brock had a big run that showed up today. Was able to do some good things. We had a couple of missed opportunities that were out there,” Norvell said.

“But we’ve really been pleased with Kevin Sperry too. I think he’s come in here early… and it’s a lot that’s on him. I think he’s handled it pretty well.”

The Florida State offense struggled mightily last season. That began with transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei‘s struggles before losing the remainder of his season to an injury. Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek would replace him. Kromenhoek now plays for Mississippi State. Glenn, meanwhile, struggled while completing 44.7 percent of her passes for 597 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions.

Thomas Castellanos, meanwhile, spent the last two seasons at Boston College, but left the team early and ultimately transferred. In eight games, he completed 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,366 yards and 18 touchdowns to five interceptions.

Following the season, Mike Norvell made some major changes. That included bringing in Gus Malzahn to run the offense. So, even with some quarterbacks having some experience at Florida State, it’s a new system for everyone. Even Castellanos, who played for Malzahn at UCF, is dealing with a new team and environment. All of that adds to the importance of improving during the limited spring practice time that the Seminoles have.
