It was a rough first quarter for Florida State Friday night out of the bye week. The Seminoles trailed Duke 7-3 after some “self-inflicted mistakes,” and Mike Norvell pointed those out ahead of the second quarter.

Florida State struck first on a field goal, but had a bad snap on its next attempt, which led to a block. Then, Brock Glenn threw a pick-six on the ensuing possession to give Duke a 7-3 lead, and he fumbled on the next play to set up a Blue Devils scoring drive to extend their lead to 14-3 in the second quarter.

Norvell pointed out the issues that plagued Florida State in the first quarter as the Seminoles search for their second win of the season. He called on his team to settle in and get back to their game as the night rolls along.

“The two turnovers – obviously, the pick-six, and then turning it over in our own end,” Norvell told ESPN2’s Dawn Davenport. “We’ve had some opportunities we’ve got to take advantage of. We got down to the red zone, we’ve got to finish with the touchdown. And then, we had a bad snap on a field goal, which led to the block.

“A lot of self-inflicted mistakes. They’ve taken advantage of it. We’ve just got to calm down and go play Florida State football.”

Florida State is coming off a 29-13 loss to Clemson prior to its bye week to fall to 1-5 on the season.
