WATCH: Mike Norvell loses it on player following first quarter late-hit penalty
Florida State defensive back Jarrian Jones was thrust into action tonight against Duquesne, due to the Seminoles being without the services of Omarion Cooper due to injury. Unfortunately for Jones, he was yanked out of the game by his head coach, Mike Norvell in the first quarter due to a late-hit penalty. He leveled Dukes’ receiver Abdul Janneh down the sideline. The hit came not only after Janneh got the first down, but right after he stepped out of bounds at around the 30-yard line.
Not surprisingly, the Seminoles’ head coach was furious about the hit and let Jones know about it immediately.
Following the penalty, Florida State defensive back Greedy Vance, Jr. then entered the game for Jones, who was benched by Norvell. Jones eventually re-entered the game and made a nice pass breakup in the second quarter.
Tonight’s kickoff was originally slated for 5:00 PM EST, but was delayed to 6:30 PM EST due to a lengthy lightning delay in the Tallahassee, Florida area surrounding Doak Campbell Stadium. Florida State currently leads Duquesne 23-0 in the first half.

The weather has still been pretty bad for much of the early part of Saturday night’s contest with a torrential downpour in much of the first half.
Florida State is opening their third season under head coach Mike Norvell. With an 8-13 record his first two seasons, Seminole faithful are hoping to see their first winning campaign since 2017. Based on ESPN’s predictions for this season, they may get just that down in Tallahassee.

Norvell’s team missed the bowl season by a game in 2021 with a 5-7 record. A four-game losing streak, including a loss to an FCS team, did Florida State no favors. However, turning it around to finish 5-3 was an improvement. Schlabach says their season was better than some realized. They just couldn’t shake people first noticing their initial four game stretch.
