The 2024 season hasn’t gone the way anyone expected in Tallahassee. With that, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell made several notable staff changes, including at offensive coordinator, moving on from Alex Atkins.

Norvell’s next offensive coordinator hire at FSU is going to be a massive one. However, it also comes with questions, like how much of the offense will be Norvell’s and how much will be the new coordinator’s. Those are conversations that Norvell knows he needs to have and shared that everything is on the table.

“I’d say yes to all,” Mike Norvell said. “All of those conversations are real and I’m open to — we haven’t been good enough offensively this year. It’s been awful. We all know it. We’ve all watched it. There’s been plenty of reasons for that, and there’s been plenty of things that we have to improve and be better.”

Throughout his time as a head coach, Mike Norvell has had some of the best offenses in the country. However, that hasn’t been the case this season and those struggles have been a major reason why the Seminoles are sitting at just 1-9 on the season. So, with the goal of avoiding another season like this, everything is under evaluation.

“But my job is to evaluate every part of our program, what we’re doing, how we’re doing it, and then make the best choice of what’s going — where are we going to take the biggest steps obviously as fast as possible to be able to go be what I know we’re capable of becoming,” Norvell said. “So, yes, to all questions. I will evaluate all those things, and everything is on the table.”

Mike Norvell addresses decision to overhaul FSU staff, fire coordinators

It wasn’t an easy decision to move on from his offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and wide receivers coach. However, Mike Norvell also knew that those were necessary changes to make at this point in the season.

“Yesterday, with the decision to, you know, change with the three coaches? You know, obviously it’s hard. I mean, those are great, great men and they’re great coaches. I mean, obviously, you know, this season and, you know, where we are is not to the standard of anyone, you know, and not to the standard of them either. The decision to make the change was one that, you know, I deemed was best for the program,” Norvell said.

“You know, obviously there’s never a good time or a right time to do that but I felt like it was a time that was necessary for us. Felt it was in the best interest, you know, for our program and that’s why I decided to make that decision there yesterday. Ultimately, it’s still about the, you know, focus of what we can do to go finish this season the best that we can. You know, the results have not been to what anybody expected but we are where we are. You know, I made the choice to make a change and, you know, it was what I felt was the right time to do it.”
