Mike Norvell on FSU's College Football Playoff chances: 'We've done what is necessary'
Florida State enters Selection Sunday as a 13-0 ACC Champion — but they’re still not guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoff.
No undefeated Power Five conference champion has ever been left out of the final field of four. Still, Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell made the decision to join ESPN’s SportsCenter to make one last plea to the CFP selection committee in front of a national audience.
“I’ve got absolute confidence in that we’re gonna get our opportunity. As we sit there and you go through the journey there are plenty of talented teams out there that obviously get their chance, too, but you’ve got to go do it on the field. That’s what makes college football so special. This team, every every chance that we’ve got, whether it’s home away, the adversity we’ve had to overcome — they’ve just responded and we’ve done what is necessary because it still comes down to winning the game.
“We’ve taken advantage of each of each of those opportunities to be 13-0, to be a really special football team that shows that grit, shows that resilience and they put it on display once again last night against a top 15 opponent. They were able to accomplish being the undefeated ACC champion and believe that we have earned that opportunity.”
The Seminoles did everything the committee tells you to do. Beat everyone? Check. Schedule tough non-conference opponents? Check. Every adverse situation put in front of Florida State this season has overcome with triumph and victory.

Alabama, Georgia and Texas all can make similar cases as to why they deserve to be in the final group as well — but Florida State still has one thing over all of those teams. The Seminoles haven’t lost one game this season. Norvell knows this, and made sure to emphasize it to the committee during his brief appearance on SportsCenter.
“I’m just so proud of this team, I’m so proud of all that they’ve accomplished and everything that they’ve earned on the field,” Norvell said. “When you go through the journey that we’ve been on — we beat eight Power Five bowl-eligible teams. We’ve beat two SEC teams on the road, one on a neutral side and one with our with our backup quarterback there in the last game of the regular season.
“And then with just with how our team responded last night. We started a true freshman quarterback or defense, they rose up and played played outstanding throughout the course of the game. You see a complete football team and they’ve earned an opportunity and I’m just so proud of them and excited about to all that has been accomplished.”
Florida State will find out its fate when the College Football Playoff committee releases its final rankings, which will be revealed at Noon ET live on ESPN.
