Mike Norvell provides background on the recruitment of Johnny Wilson

Florida State wide receiver Johnny Wilson is off to a blazing start to his sophomore season, and also his first in Seminole colors after transferring from Arizona State. He already surpassed his total receiving numbers through two years at ASU in just three games at FSU. This past weekend’s game at Louisville being his big breakout, where he went for 149 yards, two touchdown catches, and several other incredible grabs. Kid looks like a star of the future for Mike Norvell and co.
Following his huge performance, Norvell was asked about Wilson at a press conference this week. Specifically, if he could remember what the recruiting process was like for Wilson once he entered the Transfer Portal. Well, according to the Seminole skipper, Wilson’s phone lit up with a call from Mike Norvell within half an hour of him officially entering the portal.
“I actually remember I was in Arkansas when I saw his his name went in the portal and, obviously, I got a lot of familiarity with that program. But, you know, when I saw his name go in, I actually immediately got on my computer and pulled up every play that he’d had in the last year and a half. I think I was on the phone with him after after I watched it. I was on the phone with him within 30 minutes. Told him that there was no doubt this was gonna be a great situation for him.”

And the rest is history. Or, becoming history, considering he just went for 150 and two TDs in his third game with the program. A lot to like from Wilson, according to Norvell. Athletically, mentally, physically.

“You know, I just saw in his movements, his size, what he did. I went back and watched all his high school tape. I mean, it was pretty quick for me. And to see him coming in and just growing and becoming the player that I believe and knew that he would be — it’s exciting and you you get a sense of the young man. It’s one thing to watch film. But there’s plenty of people that I could contact about the character and the type of person what he was.
“So when I talked to him — just the desire and the work ethic that he has to be great. I mean, that’s what makes him remarkable. I would encourage everybody, you could watch the however many catches he had for however many yards. Hell, watch him block like that. I thought he was dominant in his blocking. And, you know, it’s good to see somebody that does that.”
He’s super-talented and can block? What a receiver.
