The final minutes of Sunday night’s game between Florida State and LSU was filled with action and emotion. Ultimately, the Seminoles came away with a 24-23 victory after a blocked extra point after time expired. Following the game, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell recapped the final minutes, and revealed his message to his team as the clock winded down.

LSU cut Florida State’s lead to seven with just more than four minutes remaining in regulation. The Seminoles got the ball back, but were forced to punt. LSU’s Malik Nabers muffed the punt, and Florida State was there to recover. Three plays later right on the goal line, Florida State’s Treshaun Ward fumbled and LSU recovered. The Tigers then drove 99 yards down the field to score, but fell short after the failed extra point.

Norvell told Florida State to just go play the next play, and that’s exactly what his team did. Even after giving up what seemed to be the tying score, his special teams unit came through to secure the victory.

“It’s never good to have a disappointing play or a disappointing moment,” Norvell said. “But ultimately it’s where you let your mind go. Even after the fumble, just go play the next play. Go play the next play. Ultimately they did a good job of executing, they ran a good two-minute drive, they were able to finish in the endzone. Go play the next play.”

Norvell raves about Florida State’s special teams unit

It was a disastrous day for LSU on special teams, and a lot of that was due to the strong performance from Florida State. The Seminoles blocked two kicks and capitalized off of two muffed punts, and Norvell was extremely happy with what he saw out of Florida State there on Sunday.

“Special teams? Unbelievable today,” said Norvell. “Two blocked kicks, two takeaways that were created in our punt coverage unit. I told the guys there throughout the course of the week, you never know when that moment’s going to show up. You better be in position to capitalize on it. And I think that’s what that game just illustrated in all facets.”

Florida State is now 2-0 on the year after victories in Week 0 and Week 1. The Seminoles have Week 2 off, but come back in Week 3 and kick off ACC play against Louisville on the road.
