Mike Norvell reveals if FSU considered benching DJ Uiagalelei for Brock Glenn earlier in season
After DJ Uiagalelei suffered a hand injury in Florida State‘s loss to SMU in Week 5, Florida State named Brock Glenn its starting quarterback. Although Glenn was unable to lead the Seminoles to an upset win against Clemson on Saturday, he showed promise.
Glenn’s performance led some fans to question why FSU head coach Mike Norvell waited until Week 6 to start the redshirt freshman. On Tuesday, Norvell revealed if the Seminoles’ coaching staff considered benching Uiagalelei before his injury ever occurred.
“There was definitely thought of it,” Norvell said. “Obviously, everything we do is, we’re trying to make the best decisions for this team. And, we’re trying to make the best decisions based off the information, the knowledge, the things that are seen every single day in practice of how we prepare and what we do. There was talks with Brock even in the weeks prior, [about] having to be ready and having to be prepared.
“We saw this week with Brock, there’s some good, there’s some bad, but you also got to help them in some situations for us to be able to play as well as we can. I thought he did a really good job with his opportunity and I am proud of him.”
In Florida State’s 29-13 loss to Clemson, Glenn completed 23-of-his-41 pass attempts for 228 yards and two touchdowns while only throwing one interception. Glenn didn’t receive any help from Florida State’s backfield, which only recorded 22 rushing yards on 23 carries.

For reference, Uiagalelei only threw more than 224 yards once in his five starts this season and never threw more than two touchdowns in a single game.
Glenn may be FSU’s starting QB for the remainder of the season. On Saturday, reports surfaced claiming Uiagalelei may be out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery for his hand injury. Uiagalelei will at least be unavailable to return for multiple weeks.
Brock Glenn will look to secure his first win as a starter this season on Oct. 18 when the Seminoles square off against Duke at 7 p.m. ET. The game will air live on ESPN2.
