Mike Norvell has high expectations for what this year’s Florida State team can accomplish. With the growth he’s seen within the program over the offseason, he thinks that improvement will carry over into the season and help the Seminoles win this fall.
Norvell was asked what would define a successful 2022 season in Tallahassee. He says it will all come down to the constant maturation of his players with this week’s game against Duquesne being their baseline.
“It’s seeing that continual growth. I want to see us play our best ball each and every week. To see us grow and get better. This week is our first opportunity,” said Norvell. “(It’s) going to be our first opportunity to see exactly where we are and then, building from there, we have to see that gradual improvement.”
By definition, Florida State has improved over Norvell’s two seasons at the helm. They won three games in 2020 but jumped up to five in 2021. They improved their conference record too with a 2-6 stretch in his first season and a 4-4 slate during his second.

Mike Norvell now says it’s time to take another step. The improvements so far have been solid but they don’t exemplify what the Seminoles have been as a program in year’s past. Norvell says he isn’t going to put a cap on what this year’s team can become. He’s just going to let them off the leash, watch them advance, and hope it leads to a great record.
“I’m not going to put a limit on what this team can do or accomplish. I really am excited about this group…(Development) is what will ultimately define success. We need to see that continued growth within the program,” Norvell said. “I want to win every dang game. Ultimately that’s what we’re here to do. But you have to see that growth, see our guys go out there and play to the best of their ability in every opportunity they get.”
In an improved ACC, the Seminoles will have a tall hill to climb during the year. It’s how they battle through it, though, that’ll make the difference to Mike Norvell. Some may look at a poor Seminole record and think they’re underachieving. Regardless of wins or losses, it’s his team’s improvement during the season that will count to Norvell at the end.
