Mike Norvell says Keon Coleman is doing a great job with learning offense
Over the last couple of years, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell has become known for successfully tapping into the transfer portal. This offseason, one of the biggest names that he pulled out was wide receiver Keon Coleman, who was a star at Michigan State.
Now, Norvell says that Coleman is doing a great job adjusting to Florida State and learning the new playbook.
“He’s really doing a great job and he’s — I think he’s just smart,” Mike Norvell said. “I mean, he embraces the complexity of what we ask our receivers to do. He wants to know it all and he’s come in for the first time for the first day.”
Last season, Coleman was one of the Big Ten’s best wide receivers. He snagged 58 receptions for 798 yards and seven touchdowns. That was his first full season in college after taking a redshirt in 2021 while playing in four games, too. Now, he’s looking to break out again in an explosive Florida State offense.
“So, to be able to move him around, to move him to different spots, the things that the specific details — I mean, there are some things that are just different than what he’s done. You know, you might have a certain route that you run at two places, but how you want it run or maybe tips or maybe things to try and give you competitive advantages might be new, and I think he said he’s like a sponge because wants it all and I love that about him. Very competitive when he’s on the field and he’s done a good job of making impactful plays.”
Mike Norvell also recently said that Keon Coleman has been a ton of fun to coach and Norvell did add that he’s like a sponge.

“He’s done really well. The work he’s putting in understanding what to do, and now we’re continuing to grow and develop in how we want it done. He is an absolute sponge,” Norvell said.
“He’s so much fun to coach because even though the experience he has, he’s coming to get better. He’s coming to learn, to grow. After every play, he’s trying to get to the smallest details of what he can do. And understanding when you’re in different systems you’re asked to do different things.”
Keon Coleman on how the Florida State offense is different than Michigan State’s
According to Keon Coleman, the challenge of learning a new offensive system isn’t necessarily learning new concepts. Instead, it’s getting adjusted to approach, tempo, and the players around you.
“There are only so many concepts that you can run,” Coleman said. “[The playbook] is more open [at Florida State] because you have more guys that can make more plays all over the place. It’s really just an open offense, you’re just running at your tempo.”
