As the 2023 season fast approaches, optimism is sky high in Tallahassee, Fla. Perhaps the main reason is the expectations for Jordan Travis, the starting quarterback for the Seminoles.

He’s coming off a year that saw him finish as one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Florida State won 10 games.

And the scary part? It could get even better for the Seminoles in 2023 with Travis back again, along with a host of other weapons he’ll have at his disposal. History says he’s poised for a big year.

“If you look at Mike Norvell‘s quarterbacks over his time as a college coach, they’ve all gotten better and better the longer they’ve been in the system,” Warchant’s Ira Schoffel told JD PicKell in an On3 Roundtable. “You look his quarterbacks at Memphis, going back to Arizona State, certainly now with Jordan Travis, the longer they’re in the system you see dramatic improvement.

“I think they expect to see even better than we saw last year.”

Travis was lights out in 2022. He finished the year with 3,214 yards passing, with 24 touchdowns against just five interceptions. He was also a major weapon with his legs, rushing for 417 yards and seven scores.

His ability to make defenders miss in key situations was clutch; it was a huge factor in Florida State’s win over its rival Florida.

Schoffel outlined why expectations for Jordan Travis are so high.

“His last game out was throwing for over 400 yards against Oklahoma,” Schoffel said. “He had some huge games with his legs against Florida and some other teams. I think that they think he’s going to be better this year than he was last year, and he should be because he’s got better weapons around him.”

Florida State already had a pretty good array of players at the skill positions.

The program was among the ACC’s best at running back. Meanwhile, Johnny Wilson was an absolute weapon at receiver, and he’s back. Then the Seminoles hit the transfer portal hard.

“They went out and got some really nice pieces like Keon Coleman at wide receiver, Jaheim Bell at tight end, several new offensive linemen,” Schoffel said. “Then he’s got the experience and then also just the experience and familiarity with the system. I think that he looked better this spring than he did last year, and I think they expect that he’ll look better this fall.”

So yeah, expectations for Jordan Travis are rightfully pretty high. He’ll need to live up to them fairly quickly, too.
