Reasons to buy into Florida State hype entering 2023
After a terrific season in 2022 and a sort of breakthrough year for head coach Mike Norvell, the Florida State football program is garnering a lot of talk this offseason, especially since they return some real firepower on offense and have filled out the roster with top-end talent in the last few recruiting classes. So, with the hype train full steam ahead, is this a ride worth joining? Or, is everyone getting their hopes up for more disappointment?
JD PicKell broke down what’s real and what’s not regarding the FSU hype over on the On3 YouTube Channel recently. There may be reason for some skepticism, but PicKell believes there’s absolutely evidence to back the big talk behind the Seminoles this spring and summer. You can watch his breakdown on Florida State in this video or read below to see his full comments:
JD PicKell decides whether to buy the hype on Florida State
“Am I buying the hype in Florida State? Yeah, I’m buying the hype in Florida State. I wonder why: because the production that’s returning is No. 1 in the country and this team won 10 games a season ago, so I already know the roster is, on paper, at least good enough to compete for a 10-win season. That’s great. Well, on top of that, Mike Norvell, true to form, rubs his fingers together, rubs his hands together — a little plot going on down there in Tallahassee and he goes to the portal and lands Jaheim Bell from South Carolina and lands in All-ACC corner and found Fentrell Cypress from Virginia; and goes and lands a one-on-one problem in Keon Coleman from Michigan State; DarylJackson from Miami, playing the defensive line, like you you hear.

“What I’m saying, here, you know what I’m talking about. Florida State already had a good roster with a lot coming back and then they just go a little Salt Bae, just sprinkle a couple of transfer portal guys on there and the roster is primed to do some really good things. And to be honest with you, that’s what we’re going off of right now. We don’t have all the in-season storylines. We have a roster, we have talent that we can evaluate right now and I promise you: Florida State, some really good talent.
“Now, on top of that, what’s the most important position in football but in sports in general? It’s the quarterback. And Florida State has got a good one coming back in Jordan Travis. So you got your quarterback who’s a stud and a lot of people have in the Heisman conversation in the early going, ourselves included. You got a roster that won 10 games a year ago and you got some beast mode guys coming through the Transfer Portal. Yeah, I’m buying hype in Florida State.”
