The Florida State Seminoles have been one of the most historically dominant programs in college baseball. Unfortunately for FSU, they missed the NCAA Baseball Tournament this year for the first time in 45 years. On Sunday, the ‘Noles made a hire that they hope brings them back to their winning ways. They hired Dallas Baptist’s Micah Posey as their new pitching coach, according to d1baseball.com’s Kendall Rogers.

Posey just wrapped up his third season as the pitching coach for the Dallas Baptist Patriots. In all three of his seasons with the Patriots, Posey guided DBU to appearances in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. Under his guidance in 2022, the Dallas Baptist pitching staff led the Missouri Valley Conference and ranked 26th nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (10.0). The 10 strikeouts per nine innings set a new school record.

Throughout his college baseball coaching career, Posey has coached eight pitchers that have gotten selected in the Top 10 rounds of the MLB Draft. Prior to Dallas Baptist, Posey has established himself as one of the better pitching coaches in college baseball at such stops as East Tennessee State (three years), Elon (four years).

Prior to joining college baseball, he coached under his father at North Florida Christian in high school baseball.

Posey will hope he can be the spark to turnaround the Florida State program. This season, the ‘Noles finished with a disappointing 23-31 overall record.

Florida State has an impressive history in their program

FSU has finished as the national runner-up three times (1970, 1986, and 1999). Since 1990, Florida State has had more 50-win seasons, hosted more NCAA Tournaments, and finished in the Top 10 more than any other team in the nation. Since 2000, FSU has been devastatingly dominant, racking up more victories and a higher win percentage in the regular season than any other school.

The Seminoles have made the postseason 44 years in a row. Unfortunately, this season, that impressive streak officially came to an end. Florida State’s loss to Wake Forest, combined with Pitt’s win, mathematically eliminated the Seminoles from ACC Tournament contention. It was officially the first time in 45 years that Florida State has not made the NCAA Tournament.

It’s going to be tough to replicate Florida State’s streak in college baseball postseason appearances, no question about it. Especially in the NIL and transfer portal era of college athletics. The Seminoles’ baseball program has produced 100 All-Americans over the years, including such legendary players such as J.D. Drew. Drew won every award imaginable in 1997, finishing as one of the most decorated players in FSU baseball history. He won the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy, among many other accolades.
