Florida State has a ton of returning pieces on the roster, with one of the more important being running back Trey Benson. He returns to Tallahassee for his second season in the program, leading the team in rushing. However, there is always room for improvement and Benson has been putting in the work this offseason.

Benson looks to be in incredible shape heading into the 2023 season. He is now sitting around 223 pounds, up nearly eight from last year’s playing weight. However, it’s not every time putting on weight equates to good weight. With Benson, that does not seem to be a problem.

Photos were posted of the running back’s progress and it looks night and day different. Benson looks to have gained some serious muscle and will be ready for Week 1 against a stout LSU defensive line. A good sign for head coach Mike Norvell.

You can check out the photos here.

Benson was so close to being a 1,000-yard rusher last season, finishing ten yards short. He did so on just 154 carries while adding nine touchdowns. There was some solid production in limited receiving opportunities too, having 144 yards and 13 receptions.

Norvell has a ton of confidence in his running back, talking him up during the 2023 ACC Football Kickoff. He believes with the offseason work Benson has put in this season, he is “one of the best running backs in the country.”

“You see him really trying to focus on those little things, whether it’s pass protection, being able to showcase all the things, catching the ball out of the backfield,” Norvell said. “Then, he’s pretty special when he gets the ball in his hands as a runner too.

“So, his confidence has continued to grow. Another person that’s so unselfish, so humble, but really just a dynamic player and I think he’s going to be special in that running back room.”

Seeing these photos likely would only increase Norvell’s opinion of Benson.

Jordan Travis might be the main focus of the Florida State offense and rightfully so. A multi-year returning quarterback is always going to get a ton of attention. The Seminoles will run their offense through Travis.

But Benson is always going to be there whenever Norvell needs a safety net. If he can get to 1,000 yards this season, it will be considered a major success for him in Tallahassee.
