Trey Benson opens up on his career-best performance in win against Virginia Tech
The Florida State Seminoles were finally able to put the Virginia Tech Hokies away on Saturday night, thanks to a career-best performance from Trey Benson — he shredded the Hokie defense for 200 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
He became the first Seminoles player to rush for 200 yards in a game since Dalvin Cook did it in 2016. Following his dominant showing, he spoke with ESPN’s Quint Kessenich on the field after the 39-17 win.
Trey Benson talked about his career-best performance
What was it like on the two big runs he ripped off during the game?
“Man, it means a lot. The o-line has been working hard. The whole bye week and stuff. Had to reload and get the running game together,” Benson said.
What was his reaction when people said Florida State can toss it around, but that they’re running game is a little shaky?
“We took that in defense. It made us mad. It made us eager to get better and work this whole bye week. And I’m proud of this o-line and I’m proud of my running back room for staying on me, continuing to motivate me, and yeah,” Benson responded.

What’s the process been like for Benson to battle back from a severe knee injury?
“It was hard. But you know, I had my mom. My family. They continued to [push me]. My coaches. And soon as I got here, my confidence was through the roof,” Benson said.
What steps forward did Florida State take on Saturday after the bye week?
“5-0. We established the run game today and that’s what I’m proud of. That’s what we were working on this whole bye week and I’m proud of this team,” the Seminoles star running back said.
Trey Benson ripped off two huge runs on Saturday, one of them being a 62-yard touchdown run. At the time, it was his career-long. That one helped to push the Florida State lead to 29-17 with 14:31 in the third quarter. Then later in the game, he ripped off an 85-yard touchdown run, setting yet another career-long. That one helped push the ‘Noles lead to 39-17 in the fourth quarter, and that would be the final score.
The two touchdown runs proved to be backbreaking for the Virginia Tech Hokies and they simply couldn’t recover, despite a very valiant effort on Saturday night.
With the win, Florida State moved to 5-0 overall and first place in the ACC.
