Ahead of the 2023 season, Florida State Seminoles running back Trey Benson broke down what his personal goals are for the season.

In a year when a lot is going to be expected from Benson and the Seminoles’ offense, he wants to improve the most as a leader.

“Me, personally, I just want to become more of a leader,” Trey Benson said. “More of a vocal leader because last year I feel like I wasn’t — I didn’t talk as much. So, this year I just want to be able to put the running backs on my back sometimes and whatever they need [from] me, I’m there for them, and they’ll be there for me as well.”

While working to improve his leadership, there’s no doubt that Benson has tons of talent and should make his impact on the offense. Last season, he rushed for 990 yards and nine touchdowns.

That was his first season with the program, after transferring from Oregon. So, it’s easy to see where he was adjusting to a new program and not acting as the vocal leader he wants to be. Now, in his second year with Florida State, Benson is ready to take charge.

While improving as a leader is most important for Trey Benson during the 2023 season, it’s also going to be important that he improves on the field for Florida State too. This is a team with massive expectations and Benson providing balance in the running game would be massive.

Mike Norvell on how Trey Benson can take the next step

It’s going to be important for Trey Benson to take another step on the field too. Luckily, for Florida State, head coach Mike Norvell knows how he can take that next step.

“It’s been great. For some people who don’t know Trey’s story, when he came to Florida State, he was coming off a devastating injury. We had to bring him along and help him build confidence in himself, you know, just coming off that injury. You look back last year, close to a 1,000 yard rusher. You know all the things –now, this year is taking the next step because it’s not just that he can play football, it’s continuing to elevate himself to, I believe, being one of the best running backs in the country,” Norvell said.

“You see that confidence. You see him really trying to focus on those little things, whether it’s pass protection, being able to showcase all the things, catching the ball out of the backfield. Then, he’s pretty special when he gets the ball in his hands as a runner too. So, his confidence has continued to grow. Another person that’s so unselfish, so humble, but really just a dynamic player and I think he’s going to be special in that running back room.”
