Mike Norvell‘s tenure at Florida State started off like a car going off-road with the wrong wheels. It was a bumpy ride.

But Norvell and the Seminoles turned it around in 2022 with its first 10-win season in over half a decade and first winning record since going 7-6 in 2017.

The team has made plenty of strides over the last 12-18 months. But Urban Meyer believes they aren’t ready just quite yet for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

“Florida State is still a year away,” Meyer said on Urban’s Take with Tim May. “I think the Florida State team is a year away. You think about what that coach Norvell has done down at Florida State. They were awful a couple years ago. I had to sometime run it back and say, is that really Florida State we’re watching? and you look at him now, that’s a good coach, excellent staff and they got really good players.”

Florida State’s turnaround in 2022 was one of the biggest surprises of the college football season. The Seminoles opened the season with four straight wins and six straight wins to end the season.

Now, the team did lose three straight games in the middle of the year. But those losses did come against Florida State’s toughest opponents in Wake Forest, NC State and Clemson over three straight weeks.

Their biggest victory of the season arguably came during Week 1 against LSU. The Tigers and Seminoles went to battle at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans in the Louisiana Kickoff.

The game was a chaotic battle that ended up with Norvell and Florida State emerging with a memorable 24-23 win. The Tigers — who were down two touchdowns with under five minutes left — scored a touchdown as time expired by the Seminoles blocked the PAT to end the game and give Florida State the victory.

The Seminoles and Tigers will face off again at a neutral site this year in Week 1 in the biggest game of the weekend. Both teams are ranked in the top 10 of the rankings and it will be broadcast in primetime Sunday night.

A victory would be one of the biggest wins in recent memory for the Seminoles, who despite Meyer’s belief they are one more year away, are hopeful to compete for the College Football Playoff this year.

However, he predicts that LSU will win the game.
