Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis gave the Seminoles a 14-7 lead in the second quarter with a rushing touchdown showcasing his speed. On a designed bootleg run play, Travis sped to the endzone before any Notre Dame defenders could catch him.

Jordan Travis leading Florida State

In a major opening week game for the Seminoles, Jordan Travis got the opportunity to start at quarterback over McKenzie Milton on Sunday. As the Seminoles hosted a ninth ranked Notre Dame team, Travis gave Florida State a 14-7 lead following a designed run for the quarterback.

The Florida State Seminoles named Jordan Travis their starting quarterback for Sunday’s opener vs. Notre Dame. All summer long, McKenzie Milton and Jordan Travis were embroiled in a competitive quarterback battle. Evidently, Travis gained a slight edge along the way.

When Florida State originally released their depth chart, both Milton and Travis were listed as the starting quarterback. Last season, Milton missed the entire year as he was recovering from a major leg injury. Meanwhile, Travis started six games for the Seminoles in 2020, with uneven results.

Another new starting quarterback, Notre Dame started Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan in tonight’s game. The Fighting Irish went through a quarterback battle themselves, choosing Coan as their starter over sophomore Drew Pyne.

Notre Dame has won the last two matchups against the Seminoles and neither game was particularly close. The Fighting Irish defeated Florida State 42-26 last season, and by a score of 42-13 in 2018.

The Seminoles last defeated Notre Dame in 2014, when Jameis Winston led them to an exciting 31-27 victory.

After Travis’ heroics on the ground, Florida State is set up to reclaim their 2014 success with a 14-7 lead over Notre Dame.

Jordan Travis as starter

Last year, Travis started six games and had mixed results as Florida State’s quarterback. He completed 55 percent of his passes with 1,056 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions. Travis also ran for 559 yards and seven touchdowns.

Previously, Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell said that the team had a pretty good idea of how the quarterback room would look heading into the season.

“We’re going to continue to evaluate that,” Norvell said. “As a staff, we’ll have a pretty good plan going into next week of what we want it to look like. At the end of the day, it’s always a constant competition. If there was just one piece of it, it probably would be a little bit easier. We’ve got some talented guys. Guys that are competing at a high level. We’re going to continue to see that as we progress through.”
