On Monday, eagle-eyed viewers noticed something odd during ESPN’s broadcast of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Instead of the broadcast graphics labeling Fresno State as the Bulldogs, the graphics read “Bulldongs.” As one can imagine, the awkward mishap led to an avalanche of jokes online.

Whether they’re the Bulldogs or Bulldongs, they looked excellent in the first half against Northern Illinois, securing a 13-3 lead. Fresno State quarterback Joshua Wood was on the money through two quarters, completing 8-of-his-10 passing attempts for 105 yards, without throwing an interception.

The unfortunate “Bulldongs” mistake on ESPN’s broadcast is only the latest bump in the road for Fresno State this season. After head coach Jeff Tedford led the Bulldogs to 19 wins in the span of two seasons, he was forced to step down due to health issues on July 24.

It’s been a tumultuous season under interim head coach Tim Skipper. Every time the Bulldogs have seemingly begun to find their rhythm, they’ve tripped up again, suffering back-to-back losses on two separate occasions.

Nonetheless, Fresno State fought its way to bowl game eligibility and is now making the most of its opportunity. It might be just the first step sign of a prosperous future. Earlier this month, Fresno State officially named Matt Entz its next head coach.

Entz was the assistant head coach and linebackers coach at USC this past season after serving as the head coach at North Dakota State from 2019 to 2023, where he went 60-10 and won two FCS national championships.

Fresno State athletic director Garrett Klassy raved about the hire in a statement.

“Matt Entz is a proven winner with a championship pedigree, consistently leading his teams to success on the field,” Klassy wrote. “He is a leader of people who values growth both on and off the field.

“Beyond his impressive football accomplishments, Matt and his family embody the core values of integrity, grit, hard work, and selflessness that define what it means to be a Bulldog. We are confident that they will make meaningful contributions to our University, city, and the entire Valley.”

Entz echoed Klassy’s excitement, with a statement of his own about taking over the program.

“I am deeply honored to join the Fresno State family as the head football coach. This University’s rich tradition of excellence, both on and off the field, aligns perfectly with my values and coaching philosophy,” Entz said. “My family and I are excited to become part of the vibrant Valley community and contribute to the University’s mission.”
