Jeff Tedford stepping down as Fresno State coach due to health concerns
Fresno State head coach Jeff Tedford is stepping down due to health concerns. Linebackers coach Tim Skipper will serve as the program’s interim coach. Tedford released an official statement to announce his decision.
“It is with sad emotions that following my recent medical check-up, it is clear that due to health concerns, my family and I have made the decision to step aside as Fresno State’s head coach and allow someone else to lead the football program,” Tedford wrote.
“I have a tremendous amount of pride and passion for Fresno State, and I understand the time and energy necessary to lead at a high level. The players, coaches, and Bulldog supporters deserve the best. Unfortunately, I am not able to sustain the commitment needed to perform at the level needed to guide the program.
“We are extremely fortunate to have continuity with a great coaching staff. I have full confidence that they will continue to guide our terrific student-athletes to reach their full potential on and off the field. I look forward to supporting the program in any way that I can as I focus on family and my health. My family and I will forever be grateful for the exciting and wonderful times. We also appreciate the support from the university and the community, and are grateful to have been allowed to be a part of it all.”
Tedford was the head coach at Fresno State from to 2017-19 but stepped away from the program due to heart issues. However, on December 8, 2021, Tedford was rehired by Fresno State to return to the head coach position for the 2022 season.

In total, Tedford spent five seasons as the program’s head coach. He amassed a 45-22 record and a 27-13 mark in conference play. In the 2023 campaign, the Bulldogs posted a 9-4 record and a win in the New Mexico Bowl over the New Mexico State Aggies.
Jeff Tedford’s connection to the Bulldogs extends far beyond his coaching career. He also played two seasons for Fresno State, where he established several passing records, including career marks for passing yardage (4,872) and touchdown passes (35).
Skipper, who will fill the void left by Tedford’s absence, has spent the past two seasons as Fresno State’s linebackers coach. He was also the acting head coach during the team’s win in the New Mexico Bowl while Tedford dealt with his off-field health issues.
