Maryland transfer guard DeShawn Harris-Smith commits to Georgetown

Former Maryland guard DeShawn Harris-Smith has committed to Georgetown, via the NCAA Transfer Portal. He spent two seasons at Maryland.
Harris-Smith made 36 appearances and four starts for the Terrapins this season. He averaged 2.5 points, 2.4 rebounds and an assist in 15.3 minutes per game. He shot 39.5% from the field and 20.0% from beyond the arc.
Harris-Smith had his best performance of the season in Maryland’s dominant win over Grand Canyon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. In the triumph, Harris-Smith tallied 11 points and four rebounds in 24 minutes on perfect 5-5 shooting.
Harris-Smith played an even larger role for Maryland during his true freshman season in 2023-24. He averaged 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 29.5 minutes per game while shooting 36.8% from the floor and 20.2% from 3-point range.
DeShawn Harris-Smith played high school basketball at Paul VI Catholic (VA), where he was a four-star recruit. He was the No. 34 player overall and No. 10 small forward in the 2023 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Harris-Smith was part of a mass exodus at Maryland after head coach Kevin Willard left the program to take over at Villanova after the Terrapins lost in the Sweet Sixteen. As of this report, six Maryland players have entered the transfer portal this offseason despite the program hiring former Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams.

Harris-Smith isn’t the only former highly-rated recruit Georgetown has added via the transfer portal this offseason. On April 2, Baylor transfer guard Langston Love committed to the Hoyas. Love was also a four-star recruit coming out of high school.
Harris-Smith and his fellow Hoyas will look to help Georgetown reach new heights next season as the program enters its third year under head coach Ed Cooley. Georgetown showed improvement this season, posting an 18-16 overall record and an 8-12 mark in conference play.
Alas, the Hoyas still didn’t reach the NCAA Tournament. With several fresh faces around the program next season, Georgetown will look to make waves in a competitive Big East.
