Report: Georgetown hires Providence's Ed Cooley as next head coach

Georgetown is set to hire Providence head coach Ed Cooley to the same position after he spent over a decade with the Friars, according to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports. Cooley replaces Patrick Ewing as head coach.
He is the first coach to lead the program without direct ties to John Thompson since 1972, when the legendary coach started his tenure. While the new era marks a big change, it comes after a recent slide in success both nationally and in the Big East over many years.
Cooley’s name was linked to Georgetown since the school parted ways with Ewing. As soon as Providence was bounced from the tournament, the whispers grew louder.
“You know, guys, there’s all kinds of rumors and speculation, and I know you guys are trying to do your job,” Cooley said. “I get it. But after a game like this, I just think it’s fair to talk about our players. I think it’s fair to talk about the game.
“That, man, I’m right here right now. I think those are very hard questions when you just are going off of speculation, doing your job. But it’s about this game, and it has nothing to do with my future or my present.”

More on Ed Cooley
Providence fell 61-53 to Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Cooley received a ringing endorsement from longtime Wildcats head coach John Calipari.
“Ed and I have known each other,” Calipari said. “We were assistants — well, I may be a little bit older than him — but he was an assistant as I was moving through the ranks at UMass. Coach of the Year a year ago. Is a great coach. Great communicator. Motivator. He’s terrific.”
With the loss in the first round, Providence finished 21-13 on the season. Cooley went 242-154 since the 2011-12 season with the Friars.
He led them to seven NCAA Tournament appearances with a career-best Sweet 16 appearance last season.
Providence won the Big East Conference Tournament back in 2014. Cooley is 334-223 overall as a head coach with Fairfield and Providence. He has done so while recruiting well, and utilizing the transfer portal in the new era of college basketball.
